WHAT'S ON PITTSBURGH · MIDWEEK
Happy Monday.
Short week, broad slate, and the thing I keep thinking about is a free seminar on what migrating birds are up against.
Tuesday is a pay what you want meditation hour in Friendship and Berkeley emo in Allentown.
Wednesday is the busy one: Pitt hosts a playoff match in Oakland, Cleveland comics raid the North Side, the county rangers bring out the skulls in Ross, and the Three Rivers Film Festival opens downtown.
Thursday brings the bird talk, Appalachian songs on the South Side, and Matilda at the Byham.
Let's get to it!

★ MIDWEEK PICK
🎤 CLE vs PGH: Comedian Brawl
Steel City Cellar · North Side · 7:00 PM · $15
The billing says Cleveland comics came to Pittsburgh for gameday, and calls it a big mistake. Steel City Cellar has put the two cities' best stand-ups head to head to settle it, in the basement of Max's Allegheny Tavern on Suismon Street, a German restaurant in Deutschtown. Fifteen dollars, doors at 6:30 for a 7 o'clock start. No age minimum and no drink minimum, which is rarer than it sounds.
Why go: Cross state trash talk is a Pittsburgh art form, and this is it with a microphone.
Tuesday
TUESDAY, NOV 3
🧘 Guided Meditation at the Glass Corner
Pittsburgh Glass Corner · Friendship · 5:30 PM · Pay what you want
Jeffrey Dorsey runs this weekly hour at the Glass Corner on Penn Avenue: guided meditation, then time to sit with other people and talk. No experience needed, and you pay what you want.
Why go: An hour of quiet on a Tuesday, priced so there is no reason not to try it.
TUESDAY, NOV 3
🎸 Like Roses, Heading North and Ausinette
Bottlerocket Social Hall · Allentown · 8:00 PM · $20 advance, $22 door
Emo alternative out of Berkeley, playing Allentown with Heading North and Ausinette. Doors at 7, music at 8, twenty dollars in advance and twenty two at the door, all ages.
Why go: Bottlerocket is the room where a touring band that size actually sounds loud.
Wednesday
WEDNESDAY, NOV 4
⚽ Pitt Men's Soccer vs Syracuse, ACC First Round
Ambrose Urbanic Field · Oakland · 7:00 PM
Fourth seeded Pitt hosts thirteenth seeded Syracuse in the first round of the ACC championship, 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Oakland. Pitt publishes no single match price anywhere, so ask at the gate.
Why go: A home playoff match on campus, and the whole thing turns on ninety minutes.
WEDNESDAY, NOV 4
🦌 Skins and Skulls with the County Park Rangers
Ross Community Park · Ross Township · 6:00 PM · Free
Allegheny County park rangers bring native animal skins and skulls to Ross Community Park and let you handle them, 6 to 7 p.m. Free and best for ages five and up, a grown up stays for the hour, and you register ahead.
Why go: Free, an hour long, and a child remembers a real skull far longer than a screen.
WEDNESDAY, NOV 4
🧵 Sip and Stitch at Riverstone
Riverstone Bookstore · Squirrel Hill · 6:30 PM
Bring whatever you are knitting, crocheting or embroidering to Riverstone on Forbes and work on it for two hours with wine and other people's company. 6:30 to 8:30, no booking, and the shop publishes no cost.
Why go: Craft nights usually cost money and come with a project you did not choose.
